Freak Slug – Blue Eyes
Manchester’s Freak Slug dropped “Blue Eyes” today from her upcoming EP Loose Tooth And A Short Skirt, due November 7th via Future Classic. Xenya Genovese co-wrote the track with producer Dom Valentino, who’s worked with Skepta and Greentea Peng. Genovese says Valentino “brings a spice that an indie producer just wouldn’t bring.”
“Blue Eyes” takes a different direction from her previous single “Honest Man”. Genovese wanted to create something like a surrealist painter’s romantic scene, with unclear elements on the horizon. The lyrics use visceral imagery of blue eyes and the English seaside to ground the casual romance.
Genovese wrote the EP between tours in London and Los Angeles, working through extremes of both herself and the world around her. She talks about experimenting with writing during the sun and moon, with darkness bringing out the shadow self and overthinking. The EP explores various love stories, including breakups, crushes, and hate. She calls it a more real interpretation.
Since her viral hit “Radio” hit 24 million Spotify streams, Freak Slug has been peeling back layers to reach rawer parts. Her debut album I Blow Out Big Candles dropped in late 2024 after major touring across the UK and US, plus sessions at SXSW Austin, KEXP, and Audiotree. She’s racked up over 52 million career streams.
